3/24/20252 min read
Introduction
Since learning the harmful effects that everyday products we use have on our health and longevity, I have made it my ultimate goal to eliminate as many chemicals from my home as possible. One of the first changes I made was replacing air fresheners, wall plug-ins, body sprays, etc. with a 2 ingredient product that you can make at home in less than 60 seconds with water and your choice of essential oil. So get ready to clean out that cabinet full of carcinogens and replace them with this toxin-free all natural product.
Benefits of Using Essential Oils
Essential oils, derived from plants, carry numerous benefits that extend beyond their delightful scents. They possess antibacterial and antiviral properties, making your air not only fragrant but also cleaner. Some oils, such as lavender and eucalyptus, can promote relaxation and well-being. Citrus essential oils can increase your mood, minty essential oils can give you energy and relieve tension headaches... the benefits are never-ending. By creating an air freshener spray with these natural ingredients, you harness the power of aromatherapy while ensuring that your home environment remains free from toxic substances.
How to Make Your Air Freshener Spray
Making your non-toxic air freshener spray is simple and requires only a few basic ingredients. Here’s a straightforward recipe to guide you:
Ingredients:
Distilled water
15-20 drops of your favorite 100% pure and organic essential oil(s)
A spray bottle (preferably glass or PET plastic)
Instructions:
Fill your spray bottle with water and add your selected essential oils to the bottle. You can choose as many as you'd like (I like to limit it to 3 per bottle to prevent sticking/clogging inside the sprayer).
Shake the bottle gently to mix the ingredients thoroughly.
Test the spray in your desired area and adjust the amount of essential oils as needed for a stronger or milder scent.
This simple recipe allows you to customize your air freshener spray according to your preferences. Whether you enjoy the invigorating scent of citrus or the calming aroma of sandalwood, the possibilities are nearly endless.
TIPS:
When mixing multiple oils together, I like to remove the caps and smell them all at the same time to get an idea of what they will smell like when I add them to the bottle, before mixing with the water.
If you're new to aromatherapy, lookup combinations that blend well together. There are some oils that don't blend well, and some that blend beautifully.
I prefer to make multiple different sprays so I can switch up the aroma depending on what I want to smell. I spray this on my curtains, bedding, my clothes as a body spray, my carpet, my clean laundry, pillows, the floor and seats of my car, my dog's bedding (when using pet-safe oils).... the options are endless.
When the bottle is empty, spray some warm/hot clean water through the sprayer before adding more oils. This will keep the spray hose clean and prevent clogging.
Always shake the bottle before each use.
Safety Considerations
Though essential oils are natural, it’s important to use them responsibly. Never allow undiluted essential oils to come in direct contact to your skin. Additionally, when using essential oils around pets, verify that the specific oils are safe for your furry friends. A simple Google search will confirm this for you. Some essential oils, such as tea tree, citrus and pine, can be toxic to certain animals, so ensure you're well-informed before proceeding.
