DIY Cleaning Solutions
With the increasing concern over living in a toxic-free environment, many individuals are opting for DIY cleaning solutions. As a mother of littles ones who also has a dog and a spouse who is sensitive to chemicals & profound smells, I started making my own cleaning solutions to ensure safety in my household. Before we knew it, we were using it commercially in business also, for sufaces, windows, bathrooms and floors. It works for everything! I will teach you how to use ingredients like essential oils and vinegar to concoct effective cleaning agents that are both antibacterial and eco-friendly.
Ingredients
To make a potent cleaning solution, you will need the following ingredients:
1 cup of distilled white vinegar
1 cup of water
10-15 drops of your preferred essential oils (for scent and added cleaning properties)
(Optional) 1 oz. rubbing alcohol
Distilled white vinegar acts as a natural disinfectant and deodorizer, cutting through grime easily. Meanwhile, essential oils like lemon, tea tree, eucalyptus and lavender provide antibacterial properties and a pleasant aroma, making your home smell fresh and inviting. For the bathroom, I prefer to use eucalyptus, tea tree and lemon. For surfaces, I mix it up and use whatever I want to smell. I absolutely love the combination of lemon, tea tree and orange essential oil. Always make sure your oils are real, 100% pure and organic.
Simple Steps to Create Your DIY Cleaning Solution
Creating your own cleaning solution is a straightforward process. Follow these steps for an effective DIY cleaner:
Combine Ingredients: In a glass or chemical-resistant spray bottle, mix 1 cup of distilled white vinegar with 1 cup of water. The vinegar will help break down stains, while the water serves as a diluter.
Add Essential Oils: For an aromatic twist and enhanced cleaning power, add about 10-15 drops of essential oils of your choice. Lemon oil is fantastic for cutting grease, while tea tree oil adds extra disinfectant properties. I always use at least 2 essential oils per mixture but if the surface, bathroom or floor is extremely dirty (like our commecial properties), I will sometimes use 4 or 5, or use 20-30 drops of the strongest oil (like peppermint, eucalyptus or tea tree).
Shake and Store: Cap the spray bottle and shake well to combine the ingredients. Ensure you label the bottle for easy identification and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Shake the bottle before each use as oil and water naturally separate.
Your DIY cleaning solution is now ready for use. This cleaner will sanitize better than store-bought cleaning products without exposing you to the toxic chemicals. Added benefit: it's 100% biodegradeable.
Using Your DIY Cleaner Safely
Although DIY solutions with vinegar and essential oils are generally safe, always keep a few safety tips in mind:
Conduct a patch test on surfaces before widespread use to prevent any damage.
Avoid mixing vinegar with bleach, as this can create harmful gases. Bleach, in general, is an unsafe chemical anyway.
Store your solution out of reach of children and pets.
By making your own cleaning solution, you're not only saving money but also contributing to a healthier home and planet. Embrace the power of nature and transform your cleaning routine with this easy-to-make DIY recipe!
